Lesley Stahl

Lesley Stahl was named a Co-editor of 60 Minutes in March 1991. Her first report for the program, on the selling of babies in Romania, was broadcast in April.

Prior to Joining 60 Minutes, Stahl was CBS News' Chief White House Correspondent since January 1989, where she returned after serving as CBS News National Affairs Correspondent since 1986. Stahl first covered the White House beat from 1978 to 1986.

As White House Correspondent, Stahl covered all news involving the White House and the President, and traveled with the Chief Executive on domestic and International trips. Her reports were broadcast frequently on the CBS Evening News with Dan Rather and other CBS News broadcasts.

Stahl combined her work at the White House with her role as co-anchor of the weekly CBS News late night broadcast America Tonight, from its premiere on October 1, 1990 to March 29, 1991. In addition, she served as moderator of Face the Nation, CBS News Sunday public affairs broadcast. Stahl had moderated Face the Nation from September 18,1983 to May 19, 1991.

Stahl has also contributed to the CBS News broadcast 48 Hours and has been a substitute anchor on the CBS Evening News with Dan Rather. In September 1990, she was part of the CBS News reporting team for the criticaily acclaimed news special, America's Toughest Assignment: Solving the Education Crisis.

Stahl, one of the most experienced journalists In network television, has covered stories ranging from Watergate to the attempt on President Reagan's life in 1981. She has reported on every U.S.-Soviet Summit meeting since 1978, every Economic Summit since 1979 and every national political convention and Election Night since 1974.

For Face the Nation, she has interviewed such newsmakers as Margaret Thatcher, Daniel Ortega, Eduard Shevardnadze, Boris Yeltsin, Yasir Arafat and most top U.S. officials.

In 1987, she co-anchored the CBS News documentary, The-In-The-Red Blues, a report on the U.S. deficit, and anchored CBS Reports: The Politics of Cancer in 1976.

Stahl served as Washington co-anchor of the CBS Morning News from October 1977 to December1978. She joined CBS News in 1972 as a Washington-based reporter and was named a correspondent in February 1974. In 1990, she was honored with the prestigious Dennis Kauff Journalism Award in Boston for lifetime achIevement in the news profession.

Born in Swampscott, Massachusetts, Stahl was graduated cum laude in 1963 from Wheaton College, where she now serves on the Board of Trustees. She and her husband, author Aaron Latham, have a daughter.
